First Class Second Class Composers

I remember fondly the BBC producing a series under this heading many years ago which highlighted works of great merit by lesser-known composers. Their craftsmanship, ideas and structure were in no way inferior to the works of the big names, but they (read full article)

Protesters disrupt Jerusalem Quartet Wigmore Hall broadcast

BBC Radio 3 pulled the plug on the broadcast of this recital, announcing a “disruption” at the Wigmore Hall. Listeners were startled to hear what sounded like a choir; this was some music hastily used to cover up the sound of protestors in the h (read full article)

More Bloody Lieder

As much as I love BBC Radio 3 I’m getting very fed up with the amount of song plugged on the station. I listen to the radio a lot and at random times and it amazes me how often I switch the radio on to be greeted by voice and piano and more often (read full article)

Lang Lang Murders Chopin, Dresden Staatskapelle Watch

Lang Lang played the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 at the Royal Albert Hall last night. It sounded to me like he was tugging for Britain and China. OK, I watched about 25 seconds of it, but he’s quite literally unwatchable. Sound only, still dodgy (read full article)

What’s on the radio?

I believe BBC Radio 3 has lost sight of its purpose, which is to entertain the public, the BBC has become too concerned with its own self-importance. The old BBC Third Programme (I am told) never was a music first channel, but an evenings-only chann (read full article)

Suzy Klein

I recently heard Suzy Klein make a continuity link from Richter playing Haydn to a piece by Nino Rota by informing us that Richter and Rota were contemporaries. Gosh, Richter was contemporary with Elvis Presley too, wasn’t he? Small (musical) worl (read full article)

Late Junction

I just wish to declare my pleasant surprise (and thanks) at hearing “Atom Heart Mother” by Pink Floyd on Late Junction last week. I was randomly scrolling through the radio stations (non-DAB) at 12.30 a.m. when I recognised the opening notes, bu (read full article)

Brown Bread: Sir Edward “Red Ted” Downes

I’ve just heard the sad news that Ted Downes has died, with his wife, both of them drinking a fatal draft of poison at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland. The son of the conductor Sir Edward Downes and his wife Lady Joan described today how his pa (read full article)
