It's Springtime here in the Mid-Atlantic, Washington, DC, and today, the temperatures are soaring to 87 degrees.
When the warm up comes to your hometown, what foods do you start to crave?

I like to go to my local fresh fruit and veggie market and look for the foods locally grown and in season. I love to grill veggies.-
I believe that you can. I looked it up on Amazon.com and I did not see anything that said otherwise.
Check them out on Amazon. I think you would love one. They are so versitile.

I had a wonderful Korean dish perfect for hot weather just yesterday.
It's called Nang Myun.
It's cold buckwheat vermicelli served in chilled, homemade clear beef broth with slivered cucumbers, pickled daikon, fresh green chilis, half a boiled egg, slices of cold roast beef. Just before you eat it, you sprinkle rice vinegar and a healthy dallop of wasabi into the broth and mix it all up. It's a little tart, a little spicy, very refreshing and sooo good. -

Today it will only be 82 degrees. I am grateful. Yesterday it reached 95 degrees, on April 7th! -
Oh, gosh - I did a series of warm weather posts a few years back listing all sorts of things to eat in this heat. Yesterday we had hoagies and berry smoothies. The kids had fresh strawberries for a snack. Usually we eat less and fresher. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies, homemade popsicles, smoothies, bean or pasta salads. Anything that doesn't heat up us or the kitchen!
One of my favorite salads is one we had this week: garbanzo beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, mozzarella and Italian dressing. Everything diced and the cheese cubed, toss with dressing and serve. Yummy, good for you and COOL!-
Annie, this sounds like a good direction for these hot days, more, yet branching out into more veggie and fruit related foods. I am right there with you.
Tuesday I baked chicken and heated up the condo, too! From now on, I am going to bake the night before and reheat in the microwave. My kitties like lots of chicken breast. Meowzer.

Well it's 87 degrees almost everyday of the year where I live but i'm waiting for the kenips (mamone fruit) this summer. -
It kinda tastes like a cross between sweet grapes and oranges.

"Soaring" into the 80's. Just had to laugh. I'm in Tucson, we'd consider that a nice cool day this time of year.

I just posted a Key Lime Foam on my blog from a friend (Guest Post) I think I will be trying it and other flavors of the foam when it gets hot out side. It is cold and so delightful looking that I think it will be a great cool down. -
Theresa - it's SO HOT again! Blech! No A/C here - even if we had one I can't imagine the cost. We sit in the fans and stare off into space waiting for a breeze lol-
Ladies, I can imagine and relate to not having AC, but I have to have it because of my asthma and allergies, plus I can't take the heat. It was miserable in the pastry kitchen I worked in, even though it had good central air conditioning, the ovens, continuous routines, close proximity to people and constant movement made the freezer and walk-in fridge the place to be. I had to visit numerous times, as did the others, to cool off.
A/C's on sale at BJ's COSTCO WALLMart etc., are about $100.00 and as far as the energy cost, by placing them in strategic places and keeping the shades drawn, the fans circulating the cooled air and not going in and out (opening the doors), would be preferable to doing without. It is worth it. Start early in the day, and keep the house cool. It was 90 degrees yesterday and today only 84 degrees, or so. I run the dryer at 1 AM and same with the dishwasher and washer, too. The oven is almost off limits to me because it heats the air conditioned air, which is an oxymoron.
Stay cool.

So ironic that the AC went out yesterday and had to call the AC technician. I prayed for a miracle and got one. No Charge! It has taken 14 hours to cool down and now @ 6 AM it's going to be another scorcher.
Mixed feelings but very thankful.
Today fruit smoothies and more fruit. -

Over 90...
It's been over 100 for the past several weeks now in AZ. My latest "cool" dish was a Lemon-Honey Semifreddo...

Tomorrow 96º and I am going to use my indoor electric grill (hopefully I will not set off the smoke detector, it is supposedly smokeless), chicken wings with a bourbon based sauce. Cucumber salad with crabmeat and the eggplant recipe here on HHM. I finally picked out two lovely eggplants and my husband is going to help me fry them up!

Strawberry "Cheesecake" Pie
Strawberries, marscapone cheese, sour cream, heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla - all chilled into a shortbread crust. Nice and cool for these hot days.

Aw! No fair Buck!
I want some. Hey do you live anywhere near a place called Mesa, AZ? Some nut was serving LION Burgers and a lot of folks are up in arms over this. Punch him in the nose for me, would you? I don't want anyone eating lions!
Your pie is so pretty! You know what tool you would like for garnish? A strawberry fan slicer. -
I'm pleased to say that I live in uber-liberal Tucson where Lion burgers would be frowned upon.
Mesa is just outside Phoenix and is known as a particularly strange place and I avoid it always!
As for a fan slicer, that sounds awesome. I love using fanned strawberries for garnish and just slice them with a paring knife. Bet that would be a LOT faster if doing a bunch! I really need to pick up a huller next time I'm at Williams-Sonoma, they have one that is so cute!

Oh, then you are a Northerner
I would much prefer to be closer to where you are. We really need rain. Although, the temperature is expected to drop after tomorrow, to a more comfortable 92º. Compared to 101º I will gladly take it. The loft is hotter where my iMac is and the air is not as comfortable to breathe. I used my inhaler but think I will slink back downstairs in a few. We do not have an outdoor grill. We're on the fourth floor and cannot grill on the balcony, which I am glad about. So when I hear people are grilling I get a teensy bit lonesome for grilled foods.
I want to use my oven.
102º in Washington, DC BWI airport 105º a RECORD! -
Must be really difficult dealing with high temps for extended days. Last 2 days in low 90's and today 95° here. It came very quickly for us and will break on Friday. No oven usage for a while. Ice Cream tastes good!
Good idea to stay inside as you said. Time to work on a sewing project.
Hope your temps drop soon.

Gosh, Theresa, that's awful. We're looking at a high of 85 here today, and I've got the a/c on for the first time. When it gets really hot, my appetite dwindles as the temperatures rise, and I like lots of fruit drinks and salads. 105 is simply not civilized! -
Last night it was humid and 89°F with a thunderstorm lurking. That grilled cheeseburger with lettuce & a tomato slice tasted sooo goood! -
Well, here in the desert we're at least 105 most days, although the monsoon has begun so we're beginning to get rain! YAY!!
Anyway, my latest hot weather treat has been a wonderful Coconut Gelato I found at Sprouts Market. It's called Talenti and is superb. Nearly as good as the local stuff at Frost.
Michael's current favorite flavor by them is chocolate raspberry. -

The Sonoran is the wettest desert on Earth.
There are actually many species of trees (although not very tall) including Mesquite, Cottonwood, Ironwood, and Palo Verde. We are also home to the iconic Saguaro Cactus that most people think of when they think of the West. Saguaro National Park is here in Tucson. We have rivers (although being from the east they seem more big creeks to me) and even some lakes. It's not so much sand like most people think of the desert (a al the Sahara) but more a hard packed dirt. When it rains the water soaks in quickly in some places and others sits on top of the ground for quite awhile and causes flash floods. During the Spring months large sections of the desert are covered in wildflowers from the Winter rains.
The North American Monsoon usually starts around the first to middle of July and brings rain nearly every day in the form of thunderstorms and torrential downpours. It will last until September.

Ooh ... it looks magical and not desert(y) much at all. More like a valley of beautiful flowers. Maybe I should get a small book on Arizona so I can see more of these photos. Pick some for me, will you? And plane them into a small glass of water. Wow.
I want to use the bottom portion on my header so I can have desert flowers from Buck! -
It had been 99 to 100 here. The pigs dont want to move out of the shade in the barn to eat. My livestock dogs go lay in the mud hole that use to be the creek (the one that flooded is now dried up), and we are eating more salads and sandwiches so I dont have to turn on the stove at all until after dark. Then they want me to bake a cake or cookies lol.-
I cannot wait until the weather cools down because I want to bake so many things. It heats up the entire condo and since we're on top floor and get the setting sun, I have to keep it as cool as I can. Washington DC area has been 90º+ for over fifty days. It has never been this hot here before this summer. Global warming is starting to seem very real.
I intend to make a tart tomorrow evening, after the rain and the temperatures drop. I have such wonderful peached and know exactly how I want it to look. French and rustic all at the same time.

Next I want to know when it's hot which foods do you begin to crave and where do you look to find them? Imagine there are lots of young cooks who are reading this that have no idea where to go or what they should look for.
