I cannot wait until the weather cools down because I want to bake so many things. It heats up the entire condo and since we're on top floor and get the setting sun, I have to keep it as cool as I can. Washington DC area has been 90º+ for over fifty days. It has never been this hot here before this summer. Global warming is starting to seem very real.

I intend to make a tart tomorrow evening, after the rain and the temperatures drop. I have such wonderful peached and know exactly how I want it to look. French and rustic all at the same time.

It had been 99 to 100 here. The pigs dont want to move out of the shade in the barn to eat. My livestock dogs go lay in the mud hole that use to be the creek (the one that flooded is now dried up), and we are eating more salads and sandwiches so I dont have to turn on the stove at all until after dark. Then they want me to bake a cake or cookies lol.

Ooh ... it looks magical and not desert(y) much at all. More like a valley of beautiful flowers. Maybe I should get a small book on Arizona so I can see more of these photos. Pick some for me, will you? And plane them into a small glass of water. Wow. :)

The Sonoran is the wettest desert on Earth. :) There are actually many species of trees (although not very tall) including Mesquite, Cottonwood, Ironwood, and Palo Verde. We are also home to the iconic Saguaro Cactus that most people think of when they think of the West. Saguaro National Park is here in Tucson. We have rivers (although being from the east they seem more big creeks to me) and even some lakes. It's not so much sand like most people think of the desert (a al the Sahara) but more a hard packed dirt. When it rains the water soaks in quickly in some places and others sits on top of the ground for quite awhile and causes flash floods. During the Spring months large sections of the desert are covered in wildflowers from the Winter rains.

The North American Monsoon usually starts around the first to middle of July and brings rain nearly every day in the form of thunderstorms and torrential downpours. It will last until September.

Well, here in the desert we're at least 105 most days, although the monsoon has begun so we're beginning to get rain! YAY!!

Anyway, my latest hot weather treat has been a wonderful Coconut Gelato I found at Sprouts Market. It's called Talenti and is superb. Nearly as good as the local stuff at Frost. :) Michael's current favorite flavor by them is chocolate raspberry.

Oh, then you are a Northerner :D I would much prefer to be closer to where you are. We really need rain. Although, the temperature is expected to drop after tomorrow, to a more comfortable 92º. Compared to 101º I will gladly take it. The loft is hotter where my iMac is and the air is not as comfortable to breathe. I used my inhaler but think I will slink back downstairs in a few. We do not have an outdoor grill. We're on the fourth floor and cannot grill on the balcony, which I am glad about. So when I hear people are grilling I get a teensy bit lonesome for grilled foods. :)

I want to use my oven.
As for a fan slicer, that sounds awesome. I love using fanned strawberries for garnish and just slice them with a paring knife. Bet that would be a LOT faster if doing a bunch! I really need to pick up a huller next time I'm at Williams-Sonoma, they have one that is so cute!

Tomorrow 96º and I am going to use my indoor electric grill (hopefully I will not set off the smoke detector, it is supposedly smokeless), chicken wings with a bourbon based sauce. Cucumber salad with crabmeat and the eggplant recipe here on HHM. I finally picked out two lovely eggplants and my husband is going to help me fry them up! :D

So ironic that the AC went out yesterday and had to call the AC technician. I prayed for a miracle and got one. No Charge! It has taken 14 hours to cool down and now @ 6 AM it's going to be another scorcher. :( :) Mixed feelings but very thankful.

Ladies, I can imagine and relate to not having AC, but I have to have it because of my asthma and allergies, plus I can't take the heat. It was miserable in the pastry kitchen I worked in, even though it had good central air conditioning, the ovens, continuous routines, close proximity to people and constant movement made the freezer and walk-in fridge the place to be. I had to visit numerous times, as did the others, to cool off.

A/C's on sale at BJ's COSTCO WALLMart etc., are about $100.00 and as far as the energy cost, by placing them in strategic places and keeping the shades drawn, the fans circulating the cooled air and not going in and out (opening the doors), would be preferable to doing without. It is worth it. Start early in the day, and keep the house cool. It was 90 degrees yesterday and today only 84 degrees, or so. I run the dryer at 1 AM and same with the dishwasher and washer, too. The oven is almost off limits to me because it heats the air conditioned air, which is an oxymoron. :P Stay cool.
