No they have thier uses. I use one alot in the winter. People need to quit knocking them People on CL are rude about it. They have a place right along with the microwave. They are useful when needed.

Absolutely not they are not low class.

My brother and his wife gave me a very nice big crock pot for Christmas and I am excited to get to use it again. I am going to prepare AmyBird's Crock Pot Apple Butter Recipe. There are wondrous recipes for the crock pot and believe it or not, you can set it on low and walk off and when you come home hours later the dinner is prepared. Very worth it.

The next dish I am going to make in it will be chicken and dumplings. I want the very best dumpling recipe out there, so if any cooks want to present their dumpling recipe to me I will be happy to accept so make a determination. My requirement is that thay are made from scratch.

Interesting. I never thought about bread from a crock pot. My Mother told me I would learn something new everyday. She was right.

Who'd a thunk it... bread in a crockpot. BTW: Mama used to make fabulous barbecued cocktail weiners in her crockpot.

I suppose those who think anything not trendy is "low class" suffer from pretensions.

The only place I've seen bar-b-q cocktail wieners be trendy is a church potluck or a redneck wedding. LOL Especially the ones made with Vienna Sausages.

Nooooo lol You don't mean it? Vienna Sausages as bbq cocktail wieners? I've seen them in some odd ways before, but never that!

LOL CA - actually, my hubby saw them added to Puerto Rican rice and beans instead of the usual ham or chorizo - only because it was all that person could afford. It worked!

This is the funniest question I've seen here! I don't know, I think any good French cassoulet can be prepared fairly well in a slow-cooker - especially my favorite, Choucroute Garni! Low class, indeed. They didn't need to be dumbed-down by 1970's mothers, but they aren't low-class.

I absolutely love my crockpot. Like Amy, I also use it during winter months. I make short ribs in my crockpot. It is so easy and delicious.

I love cooking in my slow cooker. Here is a great recipe (not low-class at all) from my Busy People's Slow Cooker cookbook. You should try it! You might just change your mind about your crock pot!

Herbed Beef Tenderloin with Seasoned Potatoes & Buttered Mushrooms
Put into a slow cooker before a long day away and come home to a mouth-watering aroma that’s delicious and ready to eat.

2 pounds beef tenderloin, fat removed
1 pound bag frozen, seasoned diced potatoes
    6 ounces fresh sliced mushrooms
    2 plus 1 tablespoons fat-free Ultra Promise
    1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme
    1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
    1 teaspoon garlic salt, optional

    · Spray a slow cooker with nonfat cooking spray.
    · Rub all sides of the beef with the basil, thyme, and garlic salt.
    · Place the beef tenderloin on the outer rim edge of the slow cooker. The center will be hollow.
    · Take 2 pieces of foil about 18 inches long.
    · Fold the seams together along the side.
    · Spray the foil with nonfat cooking spray.
    · Place the diced potatoes in the center of the foil. Spread 2 tablespoons of the Ultra Promise over the frozen diced potatoes.
    · Fold the foil (as you would a gift package) to seal in the flavor of the potatoes.
    · Place the potatoes in the center of the slow cooker and beef.
    · Spray another 18 inches of foil with nonfat cooking spray.
    · Place the mushrooms in the foil. Dab 1 tablespoon of fat-free margarine on top of the mushrooms.
    · Sprinkle lightly with the garlic salt if desired.
    · Fold the foil (as you would a gift package) to seal in flavor.
    · Place the mushrooms on top of the potatoes and beef.
    · Cover the cooker and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 4 to 5 hours.
    · Serve the juices in bottom of slow cooker on the side.

    Yield: 6 servings

Check out my review of Judith Finlayson's Slow Cooker Comfort Food. Not the usual "cream-of-something-soup" slow cooker recipes here... I tested four recipes and every one of them resulted in restaurant-quality,flavorful meals!

Well if they are, then guess what? Slow cookers are marvelous times savers and can take an inexpensive, tough piece of meat and make it melt in your mouth!
