What is the best way to fix fresh turnip greenes. I am from the south and the standard is chicken broth, some kind of smoked meat (ham hock, turkey leg) and cooking them forever. I have a large patch of them so I was looking for something new. And what to do with the turnips (kids and hubby wont eat them boiled or roasted)

I'm gonna confess that I have always let others cook them and I brought my appetite. I love collard, turnip, and mustard greens. When prepared by the right cook, they are positively eye-opening, close-your-eyes good!

I make them close to the way you do. I like to add some cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar (maybe 2 Tablespoons), a clove or two of garlic and chopped onion that has been sauteed first. Turnips are eaten whipped with a lot of butter here.

I love my greens cooked down with ham and garlic. Back home, we combine turnip greens with other greens and cook them down into a greens gumbo.

Another fun and different way is to roast the greens in a hot oven until they get crisp. They are like green chips. After washing and drying the greens, spray a bit of olive oil onto a sheet pan and spread out the greens. Give another light spray with the olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt. Roast until nice and crispy!

As for the turnips themselves, have you ever tried a fresh turnip salad? Lots of vinegar, s & p and some hot sauce. Also great cut into sticks for snacking!

My mom stews turnips with chicken legs. We call it, very simply, turnip and chicken stew. It is SO good. I must admit that I haven't cooked it since I've gotten married because my hubby does not eat turnips! I grow them in my garden and end up eating all of the turnips raw and sneaking the greens into salads and greens gumbo!

My other in law grew the turnips last time and my pigs ended up with a huge amount because out of her 6 kids only one ate them and my mom got a few and that was it. I want to try something new with them this year. I may try the chicken turnip stew. I am leaninr to a cheesey thing with them alos (kids will eat anything with cheese) I am also checking out the South Indian collard greenes. Thank you so much and if you have any more ideas kep them coming the will be appreciated.

I grew up in the South, but my family is from Pennsylvania (PA Dutch) and NOTHING ever gets wasted! My grandmother used to put turnip greens and small cubes of turnip in her vegetable beef soup. It was fantastic!!

Yes, even in soup it has the ability to hold on to it's own flavor.

The best way for turnip greens is Bacon w/lard, onion, and garlic. Note: for people who do not know how to cook greens... The stem is very bitter so you need to cut it out. Basically you cut a "V" shape. Did you know lard is better for you than olive oil? digg.com/u1Cfpi
