Food Gardening

Does anyone else like to grow their own food?

I love growing veggies, haven't branched into fruits yet for lack of space - but I think gardening is a lot of fun. We've grown zucchini, bush beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, pumpkins, watermelons, cantaloupes, cabbage and a slew of herbs over the years. I usually only have a small 8x8 plot, but I pack it out.

This year the cucumbers went crazy and we ended up giving so many away. The tomatoes didn't do too well. Everyone in the area has had the same problems - late ripening followed by early blight Very sad. Hoping next year is better.

We had the same issue with our tomatoes here in the Midwest, Annie.

I love to garden and then cook with our produce. Tomatoes are (usually) the only things I preserve, although I do make jellies and jams with local fruit. In our garden, we grow carrots and peppers, sugar snap peas, lettuce and spinach (this year, I had enough to freeze), tomatoes, eggplant and cucumbers. This was our first year without green beans. But the addition of carrots was completely worth it.

I also have an herb garden. We grow oregano, basil, sage, thyme, cilantro, italian parsley, and peppermint. It's amazing to me how much I rely on having fresh herbs on hand.

I am sitting here in awe of you three ladies. My Aunt Myna grew many things in her garden but I haven't the inclination nor any yard to grow a garden. I do however support my local farmers by purchasing their fresh fruits and vegetables. My Niece, Rachael is supposed to take me one day to pick our own food. I used to snitch from my neighbors when I lived in Miami. It tasted so good.

I'm a gardening fanatic. I got the bug from my dad and my two grandfathers, who let me help out in their gardens as a child.

I had tremendous success with my garden this spring and summer. I've been tracking my harvest and how much money I saved by not buying the items at the farmers' market or grocery store.

My chart is here, but it needs an update. makearoux.blogspot.com/2009/06/garden-report-and-update.html

It's as if gardeners are magicians. We all have to have something cool about us and I'd have to vote gardening as very cool indeed. Beautiful photographs and an impressive cost effective chart. Make ma want to hire someone to do some gardening for me, I only have a balcony now. I already do this when I pay the grocer. My last backyard was 75' X 80' and all we ever did was plant trees that died, mowed and watered it. My thumb is not green.

A really impressive chart! look above and check it out!

I am sure you do. I hear they are always better when home grown and fresh right out of your own garden.
