My wife and I are looking at doing some minor kitchen makeover. We are thinking about replacing the appliances and I was wondering if anybody had any brand suggestions. I don't want to spend a fortune, so brands like Viking are out but I also don't want cheap stuff. I haven't thought about all of the features yet, but I think I want a dual fuel stove. Everything else is open. Thanks for your input.

What type of appliances are you looking at? My husband worked at Amana/Maytag (Now Whirpool) and now works for a very high end under the counter refrigerator company. Usually the first thing he says is to check Kenmore as Sears goes to all the top appliance companies and chooses the best of the line. -
On the side bar is an AD you can click US-Appliance.com and the stove they are advertising is really nice looking. I go all dreamy looking at new top of the line appliances and granite countertops with a huge island. (sighs)
The Viking 48" Dual Fuel Range (so pretty) is about $10K + ! -
Thanks! We ended up going with GE Cafe appliances, except the refrigerator which is a Samsung. Samsung makes the GE Cafe refrigerator, but GE only sells a 21 cubic foot so we went with the samsung 28 cubic foot. If you want to see the final results check it out here skinnytipper.blogspot.com/2011/01/remodel-is-done.html-
Thanks again. They make me want to cook again as well. Our kitchen really is the heart of the home now. We find ourselves spending more and more time there. My wife says it looks like it belongs in a magazine. The contractor says it is the most drastic change he has ever seen in a remodeled kitchen, especially since we did not change our existing cupboards or move any walls.

My oven gets too hot, so I have to be on the watch at all times not to overcook everything. I live in an apt. I think I'll see if they can do anything about recalibrating it, instead of simply complaining about it.

I think they need in home cooking shows from those of us who turn our fab food in small apartment or condo kitchens with everyday equipment.
As much as I'd love to have Ina's kitchen or Paula Deen's (I covet that in counter deep fryer!) - most folks don't live like they do.
My landlord, who follows my blog, is always saying: "I can't believe that stuff comes out that little kitchen!" -
Buck, When you are a culinary genius it's easy to pull off.
Now retired White House Executive Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier told us in pastry class, that he had a very tiny pastry kitchen and even smaller area in which to make his chocolates and chocolate container creations. He said he had it set up "just so" and he could reach everything he required very quickly.
We all must work with what we have available to us and when we can do it with less equipment then it proves we are adaptable. I would love a super kitchen, but when it comes down to it, there is just me and Joe to cook for most times. I really long for that kitchen update, marble or granite countertops, and a larger area to do my pastry work.
I keep dwelling on the professional kitchen I want. In fact, just last night I dreamed I was working back at the GHW Hotel and doing mass production. Sometimes I really miss it. -
Oh yeah, I can see my kitchen when we hit the lottery.
But, like you it's just the two of us to cook for so I don't need huge amounts of space, but I could use better counters to roll out doughs and a better oven like most apartment dwellers I have to watch mine like a hawk when baking. I could also use a separate fridge for chilling things. If I have to chill something on a half-sheet I have to rearrange my refrigerator and clean it out. Of course, it does make me clean out things more often. LOL

Too sad Arizona is on the other side of the world. If I could wiggle my nose we'd all be content. Hearts!

It was a top freezer GE Profile, enormous inside, nearly 25 cu ft - we used to joke that it was an addition to the house. That may not be too helpful, but the fact that it ran very well after such a drop, and for so long, was a testament to the model.
Frigidaire makes affordable dual fuel ranges, but so does Jenn-Air. Wolf is slightly cheaper than Viking, and Kitchen-Aid and Electrolux are in there between them all as far as price goes.
