I have had to many to list. But my biggest was bread making at first. I made bricks that would break a window. Now I have the hang of it after years of pratice.

I have had my share of "oops" moments to be sure. The one that has become family legend is the year I made my first roast turkey. Was trying to help my mom who had to work that day. But...forgot to remove giblet bag which was, unfortunately, plastic. Needless to say my mother was not happy!! We ate the turkey anyway!

the first time that I have worked in a kitchen 16 years old I was alone in kitchen in order to make to eat to 70 people the first day I was in total shit and I was cooking the pasta 8kg at the end and I notice that I had not put the salt in the water ,then I take the package of the coarse salt that was in the pantry left from the cook before me towards the content in the water and I notice that instead of the salt there was the rice HOOPS!!!

too much late in order to cook the pasta an other time ,people was waiting for from more than twenty minutes I have served the pasta with the raw chicchi of rice….

and when the clients have wondered explanations??? the completely false answer .... that in order to arrest the cooking of the pasta in order not to become sheet you need to joins the rice....

at the end they thanked me for the secret that had learned saying that they would have made it to house ha ha ha

Ugh - not checking the shortening I had and using it anyway for cookies. No idea how I didn't smell how rancid it was - those were the nastiest cookies EVER! I thought something got stuck in the oven and that's where the smell was coming from. Figured I'd clean it out once I was finished. One bite of those nuclear pucks and we were all dying.

I was adding eggs to make bread dough and I opened one into a small cup, I usually do it this way, and wow, the fresh egg was so gone. I saved myself or rather my nose did. I smell and taste.

The first time I made chocolate cake from scratch was when I was about 12 and my mother was out. There was plenty of flour, but she was low on sugar. Lucky me! I found an unlabeled canister of sugar on a high shelf in the cupboard. What I didn't realize is that the canister actually contained salt.

My grandmother taught me always to say a blessing over a cake before putting it in the oven, then to touch the batter and taste before putting it in.

All I can say is thank God!

I spat out that horrid salty stuff and ditched the batter. ... My mother was none the wiser.

Mine was a very costly one consisting of fudge brownies at the pastry kitchen. I had been working 14 hour days and sometimes getting home at night, grabbing four hours sleep and returning to work at 4AM. Hotel work is grueling. Well anyway, I heated the heavy cream and the expensive couture chocolate at the same time. I heated it just before a boil. Wrong. You heat the heavy cream and slowly add it into the well or the middle of the bowl of chocolate and slowly stir with a whisk. I went ahead and added the chocolate and cream to the recipe and when they baked they looked very strange. I will never repeat this mistake. I had to make ten full deep sheet pans of brownies all over again. You just cannot imagine how extremely heavy this recipe was!

My biggest mishap happened late one night when I was very tired, but had committed to baking a king cake for a friend of mine. I mis-measured the yeast and the thing completely blew up while baking, strewing cream cheese and caramel filling ALL OVER my oven at 2:00am. :[

My biggest single disaster was made at my cafe years back. I had a special lunch booked for the local ladies group were to kick off the annual planning for the yearly Cancer Tea (a benefit for fighting cancer). They had requested lasagna with salad, garlic bread and dessert. The bread came out of the oven about an hour before they were to arrive. To my horror it was flat as could be and I realized that I had forgotten the yeast. They got squares of "flat bread" spread with garlic butter, parm cheese and grilled under the oven flame and topped with fresh parsley. It was on the hard side but they graciously ate it and said the flavor was lovely. lol

I still smile and chuckle whenever I remember back to the time when I was preparing my first meal in our home. We had moved from an apartment and searching through the boxes I located a pan, so I could bake the Breaded Pork Chops. Well, the resulting Pork Chops were like leather. The next day I purchased a thermometer for my “new” oven. I learned that my oven had been 75 degrees hotter than I realized. My hubby still chuckles when we remember this first experience. My sons were too young to remember it, but they certainly have heard this story about the leathery pork chops. No, we did not eat them.

OK, this happened just after I was out of college. I've always enjoyed baking, although didn't do it much until later on in life. But, at the time my idea of homecooked meant microwaved frozen dinners. In fact, I can think of twice that my roommate and I used our stove in those years. One of them, unfortunately, was for a meal for a new romantic interest.

I got the bright idea of doing a nice steak dinner and grilling steaks. Off to the grocery store to get the basic ingredients including potatoes to do Baked Potatoes. Not hard, right?

Well, I didn't know one potato from another. They had all kinds! Finally, in a panic I just grabbed a couple. So, I prepare the nice dinner and bake the potatoes. In triumph I set out my meal and realize the potatoes look weird. Instead of white on the inside they're orange! My date fell over laughing at my "Baked Sweet Potatoes."

In my defense hearth baked sweet potatoes are actually a very old southern dish. I just didn't think I was doing an heirloom recipe that day!

Now ask me about me and my college roommate calling my mom long distance to get instructions on how to do laundry! LOL
