I recall bringing home the monthly printed lunch menus from school. After I caught on to its importance to my culinary taste buds, I would read it over and circle the days I was really looking forward to.

Anytime spaghetti and apple crisp or chicken showed up, I was already marking those days in my mind, not to mention my school book.

What were some of your favorite meal combinations on the menu? And do you plan menus for your family, say weekly ones? If so, how does this work for you?

I do remember those menus and I was not allowed to buy lunch often, but when I did it was a treat. I liked the fried chicken. I don't often plan menus. I usually see what is on special and plan from there.

I do much the same. I wonder if I planned menus for one week if I would really stick to it? Good challenge for me.

I also liked the mashed potatoes and gravy with stuffing they would make to go with the meat or poultry. Loved fish sticks!

Wow Theresa that really brings back memories! I loved the pizza and also when we had salisbury steak and mashed potatoes....I love anything with gravy! I do plan my menus for the week...usually a combination of what's on sale and what we crave or what hubby requests specially. I do a marathon cooking session every couple of weeks and prepare meals for the upcoming week and some things for the freezer. It helps me stay on budget better than running to the store every few days. The way I do it is not for everyone, but it works for my lifestyle...I think the key is to find what works best for you!

That would be someone to go to the store and deliver the goods. If I had a house full of people I would be doing the menu planning. Too often we tend to spend more than necessary because is it just the two of us. Yesterday I gave away four weekend insert ads to my neighbor on the first floor. She has four youngsters and is in the perfect position to utalize the coupons and menu planning. Kids are forever hungry. They're so cute, too!

I dont have any good school menu memories. We had foor posioning once at the salad bar but other than that I stayed away from our food. It was not good at all. My sons head start class last year had great food. The cook would let them eat as much as they wanted too. She was amazed that my son would eat anything (inclding veggies)

I dont plan meals any more I just keep the pantry stocked. Since we run a farm we dont know what will be happening and what we will be doing at any given moment.

Amybyrd, I am sorry you do not have a good memory of this. We were fortunate to have had good hot lunches before there was ever talk of soda and sandwich machines being allowed in the school cafeterias.

How funny! I don't recall them for myself - each day we had cheese sandwiches that we took from home. Bleh. I hate them now. My own kids, though - circle their favorites and look forward to them.

I wish I lived in Provence - they send the menu home so the parents don't accidentally duplicate the lunch menu for dinner! Can you imagine such a fabulous school lunch?

I would love to live there myself. French food is simple and exquisite.

Macaroni and cheese was really good and then topped off with an ice cream sandwich, if my parents included money for the treat.
