Should you buy organic?

Are the high cost of organic products (think they are about 40 percent more expensive) worth it? I usually buy organic fruit such as strawberries, apples and peaches. I don't buy organic bananas or avocado because of their thick skin. But do you really need organic cookies or pasta?

I think that something that far removed from its original state has been so processed that there wouldn't be any 'residues' etc. left behind at all. I do try to get whole ingredients organic as much as possible, and we grow organic here at home, too.

What do you grow? Do you only eat organic fruit/vegetables or do you think the skin does protect you?

We grow standard things like cucumbers, green beans, zucchini, tomatoes, peas etc.

Fruit that is eaten with the skin I usually buy organic - others I don't worry about so much. There are lists online of what fruits/veggies are safer to buy grown organically. There are more than just pesticides to think about when purchasing or growing organic - it also means no augmenting of growth by artificial means ie: hormones.

Next spring I am going to grow a mini garden on the condo deck. There is no awning or cover so plenty of sunlight.

I always buy organic fruits and vegetables. They seem to taste better.

That's true, too - we were just having a conversation on FB about the fact that so much produce nowadays - unless organic - is so lacking in flavor.

I buy organic all the time and it is not more expensive but I buy from local farmers and alot of the time in season. I also grow alot of my own stuff. Check localharvest.org for a list of local farmers near you. We are getting into doing our own meat too.

a lot of them give farm tours and are happy for the business. I have a cool pic of my son hugging an earless goat. I love to take my kids to places like that.

I do not want to ask, but cannot help myself. Why didn't the goat have any ears?

Hello to all I am new here. I am an avid believe of organic or at least non-chemical / non-hormonal foods. My two cents to this topic is:
If possible grow your own veggies and fruit, buy local (Amy already posted the best link to find CSA's), when at your grocery store look for organic (always feel free to ask store manager to start getting some products/produce you want), be an organic advocate. The more we all ask the more readily available there will be, therefore the lower the costs will be.

Now here is a list of the veggies and fruits I would totally advice to buy organic:
    1. Peach
    2. Apple
    3. Peppers -green or red
    4. Celery
    5. Nectarine
    6. all types of berries
    7. Cherries
    8. Kale
    9. Lettuce
    10. Grapes
    11. Carrot
    12. Pear
    13. Collard Greens
    14. Spinach
    15. Potato
    16. Baby food
    17. green beans
