What does it mean when someone says they are a vegetarian versus them being a vegan?

I really want to know.

What foods are off limits?

Vegetarians often restrict their meat intake but not necessarily their dairy intake, and sometimes they even still eat fish. Vegans on the other hand avoid anything that has anything to do with an animal, including some wines that are clarified with substances made from milk, eggs and fish.

I have been told that vegan do not eat anything animal based. eggs, cheese, milk or meat. I am still learning from vegan friends. I have met some white meat vegeterians or ones that eat seafood. We are chaning the way we eat but we still eat meat due to hubby's prefereces. I just have been adding more vegetables than meat.

Is correct. No eggs, not nuthin. Just veggies.

My sis-il-law was vegan for a while. Then she went to Africa, and the family she was staying with had saved a month's wages to buy chicken feet.

      Eventually, she ate a zebra.

I stick with shrimp, chicken and pasta, veggies and fruits. I used to eat a lot of pork, ham, bacon, roast beef, steak and my husband tries to steer me away from those old choices.

About your question, here is a quick run down.

There are different types of vegetarians.

Ovo-lacto: People choose to eat eggs and dairy but no meat.
Ovo: Eggs but no dairy or meat
Lacto: Dairy but no eggs or meat
There is also pescetarianism which allows fish but not red meats.

Vegans reject all direct animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, fish) and usually all animal by-products (like honey) and refrain from wearing any leather, fur, etc… and using products that have other animal derivatives like gelatin.

Vegans are considered 100% pure vegetarians; as oppose to vegetarians in which consume dairy products, and byproducts of animals. Being a vegan goes beyond the dinner table; in addition, most vegans don't wear leather or silk; or any products that are tested on animals! Since becoming a vegan; I couldn't fathom my lifestyle prior to conforming to such an energetic, arresting, lifestyle!

Wow. This really helps spell out the difference for us. Thanks very much. I must admit that over the past decade I have leaned more toward becoming a vegetarian. Not there yet, but I do tend to eat more fruits, grains and vegetables.
