As we now have many worldwide members, it would be interesting to know who has ever world in a professional kitchen. From a cafe`, hotel, restaurant, bakery, concession stand, in a bar, as a waiter or server, as a hostess or a wine steward. The list goes on and on, but you get my meaning.
I want to hear about your experiences, whether old or new and share your likes and dislikes as well. The food world is full of stories.

Does Mama's kitchen at Christmas count? Feeding a hundred or so people a fresh and hot meal - she could have taught Gordon Ramsey a thing or two about keeping order in a kitchen - and never having to raise your voice!

Since college I worked at various restaurants as a server. In England at an Indian restaurant where the owners would not allow me to leave until I would take some food back home. Since I was about 13 I helped in the embassies we lived in where we have professional "grade" kitchens" and having 200+ people at home, for dinner parties, cocktails, buffets, etc was the norm! -
In my home town of NYC, my grandma started teaching me how to cook when I was 4 years old. At 11 y.o., I was the cook for my Boy Scout troop. I also wrote recipes for Boy’s Life Magazine. In the early 90’s I cooked, part time, in a restaurant with my girlfriend. She was a professional chef. Needless to say, we had a lot of ‘food fights’ at home. Between 1995 – 2001, I cooked breakfast for 200-400 parishioners, of our church, every Sunday morning between services. I also cooked for their special events and for those less fortunate; at least twice a month. Between 2001-2005 we lived in the Florida Keys where I cooked for our church there. Between 2005 and 2010 we lived in Summerville, SC, where I helped out the kitchen crew there as well. We’ve recently moved to the Columbia, SC area where it looks like the ‘kitchen maid’ will strike again. Our church needs their kitchen, "Kicked up a notch." BTW, I’ve spent over 30 yrs. in computer and electronics engineering. I am not a professional chief. Does any of this count? ;-)-
Christopher, Of course it counts. We are not defined by our employment, but rather what the impressions our living has made upon us. You sound very well seasoned, and around here, we like that!
Chef is the French term for cook. In the professional kitchen Chef is the person in charge and a lot of times the Executive ones do not cook that much, they organize and direct.
Most of the people here are home cooks.
