OUCH! I remember trying to make things very young, too. My first cooking attempt was making iced tea from a powdered mix. I climbed on the counter (I was 3) and got the mix out, put it in water, and tasted it. HORRID! I had no idea that it was sugarless :( My mom had a good laugh over it. I'd been asking her for a drink and she was talking to a friend and telling me to wait. I didn't want to wait :)

The funniest, well, more of a scary moment of cooking was my first time preparing instant noodle for myself at 5 or 6 I think.
When the water was boiled, I tried to put the noodles in from the package, but I didn't realize that the steam coming from the pan is so hot so I slipped everything in the package into the pan... meaning the seasoning pack plus the noodle. So much panicking that it will explode as the seasoning pack is in folie silver colour, which to a 5 year-old, similar to some dangerous warning colour.
From then on I'd first separate the seasoning pack from the noodle upfront :)

Very funny mooch!!! LOL! and disgusting too! what we have to do as moms to show our love and encourage our kids huh?

Theresa... I do have many more stories... I probably would never end... LOL! I hope more people participate on this discussion... but here is one more:

I wasn't very experienced baking before I got married.... I knew how to cook but not baking (My dad has been a baker his whole life but it didn't interest me).... anyway, hubby loves baked goods so I started baking and loved it... so his aunts invited me to bake Christmas cookies with them my first Christmas in the family, they are all great bakers and I was really excited about it... They gave me the recipe for peanut butter cookies and I just had to follow the instructions.... I was excited and waiting for my cookies to come out of the oven.... when they did they looked like horrible plasters stuck to the baking sheets... WHAT WENT WRONG??!! ... I kept wondering what happened until someone said... "why are the peanut butter jars still closed?" and that's when it hit me!! .... I never put peanut butter in the cookies!!!, instead I used only BUTTER because every time I read the instructions said "x" amount of "p." butter I thought "p" stood for "piece" or something like that (Hey ... My native language is Spanish so please do not use abbreviations LOL!).... DUH!

It was really embarrassing... even when I explained myself it just made me look more stupid!

Mine is a funny story. When my daughter was young (about 8/9) she thought she would make me a valentines breakfast (because i didnt have a valentine of my own at that time). She made me breakfast in bed, sweet i hear you say.. a tray laid out with flowers (picked from the neighbours garden!) a bowl of cerial and a glass of juice.
The piece de risistence was PINK.. scambled eggs on toast! she put red food colouring in the eggs.. (red..romantic, right?)
So there I was trying to eat what looked like coddled brains on toast.. I didnt want to seem ungrateful... yuk! lol
I tell that story now to remind her of her one of many embarressing cooking exploits as a child, there were many! She is 20 now and is well on her way to being a good cook.

Embarrassing: My mom says that the day she was going to meet her "father-in-law to be" for the first time she was all worried and wanted to make a good impression, she knew he loved "flour tortillas" and coffee so she thought that was pretty simple and included both "on the menu" ... she bought a new "comal" (flat pan to make tortillas) and started brewing the coffee... What she didn't know is that she was supposed to "cure" the pan for the flour tortillas before using it for the first time (with boiling water and soap several times), the flour tortillas tasted horrible and had black spots.... she thought she would solve it with the coffee but she was so nervous that she used salt instead of sugar.... good thing my now grandfather (great cook and baker) thought it was very funny.

My Mother used to recite this story about a dinner Daddy and she had for the parish priest. Daddy was great in the kitchen and that night he prepared his famous spaghetti and meat sauce. Something must have distracted him (probably one of us kids) and he drained the spaghetti without the help of the strainer. End result: Spaghetti went straight down the drain.

Embarrassing and funny:

I was making all different type of Spanish tortillas for a crowd of 30 people. As I was turning the first tortilla from the pan to the plate over the sink and everyone looking at me, the whole tortilla went down into the sink. Needless to say I was a nervous wreck doing the other 10 tortillas which thankfully came out perfect!

Painful? Hmm......mine is a pepper story as well. I was cutting jalapenos without gloves (I know better) and wiped my hands on a dish towel. A few minutes later, something splashed in one of my eyes....hubby grabbed the same towel I had used earlier and gave it to me to wipe my eyes (he did not know). You can guess the rest.....towel had oils from jalapenos on it so when I used it they got all over my face and actually burned my skin...I looked like I had been in a horrible accident....welts, eyes swollen shut....it was awful! We had to call our dinner guests and cancel and I spent the evening plastering aloe vera gel on my face!

Made three thousand five hundred (total) chocolate dream cookies, oatmeal cookies, chocolate chip cookies, shortbread cookies, biscotti, sugar cookies (rolled out with a sheeter and cut in the shape of an air plane. Paned the cookies, then after they were refrigerated or frozen I baked them off and plated them up.

OUCH! That's no fun at all. I usually do things like forgetting leavening and then wondering why my baked goods aren't working. In culinary school at the end of a busy week I was getting bread dough together before the next class came in and somehow measured way off - the pullman loaf I was making ended up weighing 8 pounds! My profs laughed about it and thankfully found a use for it - but it was really embarrassing!

My hands are in so much pain right now! I was roasting, peeling and removing the seeds from 12 poblano peppers last night! and OMG! I could barely sleep! I washed them so much, used a lotion and even salt to remove the heat and they are burning still!!! it is horrible! But I should've known better and used plastic gloves! Many times cooking has its funny, embarrassing and/or painful side! what's the latest anecdote/disaster/tragedy that happened to you in the kitchen?
