Now you can enjoy better than restaurant quality french onion soup with this recipe.

You may be surprised by some of the ingredients but they all come together to produce the most amazing french onion soup you may have ever tasted.

1. Melt 4 TBL butter in a large pot (or dutch oven) over medium-high heat.

Stir in the onions and 1 tsp salt.

Cook covered for 35 minutes stirring occasionally until the onions are carmelized and syrupy.

2. Mix in the chicken broth, beef broth, red wine, lemon juice, worchestershire sauce and garlic.

Bundle the parsley, thyme and bay leaf with twine and put into the pot.

Cover and simmer over medium heat 20 minutes stirring occasionally.

Remove and discard the herbs.

Stir in the balsamic vinegar, taste and add salt and pepper as needed.

Cover and keep over low heat.

3. Cut the baguette french bread into 1/2" slices and toast briefly in the oven under the broiler.

Put the oven-proof soup bowls on a baking sheet and fill each 2/3 full with the soup.

Top with toasted bread, slice of gruyere cheese and asiago cheese.

Broil 5 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
