My Mother used to make me French toast on Saturday mornings when I was growing up. I think what made hers the best was the fact that she used vanilla extract in the egg mixture to give it some added sweetness, and she also made her own syrup(recipe below). Her recipe is fast and tastes great, which is important for busy Moms. Try it this weekend and your kids will love it!
3 eggs
¼ cup milk
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
dash of nutmeg
8 slices of thick white bread
2 tablespoons butter
Syrup:
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon maple extract
In a shallow bowl, whisk eggs until well blended and frothy. Stir in milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg.
In a large skillet or griddle, add butter and melt. Take the bread and dip into the egg mixture, coating each side well. Drain off excess before placing into the pan or you will get little fried egg pieces on the sides. Place bread onto skillet and brown on each side for about 2 minutes.
While cooking the bread pieces, boil one cup of water in a small pan. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and stir in sugar. Mix until sugar is fully liquefied. Stir in your maple extract. Stir well. Keep warm until ready to serve.
When all bread pieces are done, place them on a plate and top with butter, and powdered sugar(optional), then pour syrup on top. How sweet!
