Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Submitted by:

Description

Great Grandma Lucille was not one for using canned sauces; she preferred to make her own. Boy were we lucky when she would whip up some of her famous homemade spaghetti sauce! Her recipe is actually extremely simple, so I am not sure why more people don't make their own every once in awhile. The difference in taste is amazing! Use fresh herbs to really give it a homemade touch.

1 large can tomatoes
1 medium can tomato sauce
1 large can tomato puree
1 large can tomato paste
1 large can water (fill empty tomato sauce can)
2 cups chopped mushrooms
1 tablespoon minced onion
1 teaspoon fresh oregano, chopped
1 ½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sweet basil, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
4 tablespoons sugar
¾ tablespoon red pepper
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 bay leaves
¼ cup Parmesan cheese

Preparation

In a large pan, add all ingredients and mix well. Simmer on low for 2 hours. Stir often. An optional way to add flavor is to add diced pepperoni. A half hour before serving, add Parmesan cheese and mix well. Serve this on top of any pasta, use it to top meatball sandwiches, or chicken parmesan, or can it to use later. Bellissima!

I've been cooking spaghetti sauce since I was eleven and this is very similar to the one my Father taught me to make.
