Homemade Wheat Rolls

Submitted by:

Description

My Mother used to make these rolls for Thanksgiving and Christmas and they were always amazing. There is nothing like homemade rolls! They take some time, mostly waiting for the dough to rise, but they are worth it. Try them once and you will never want to go back to packaged rolls again!

add to shopping list Ingredients

2 packages of yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons shortening
4 tablespoons sugar
1 cup cold water
1 large egg
3 cups wheat flour
3 cups white flour

Preparation

Dissolve 2 pkg. yeast in 1/2 cup lukewarm water. Boil 1 cup milk (do not scald), add 1 tsp salt, 6 T. shortening, 4 T. sugar.

Add 1 cup cold water and 1 large egg. Now add the yeast and stir in flour. Knead dough for 5 minutes until it is satiny looking.

Cover and let rise in warm place 1 - 2 hours, or until it has about doubled in size.

Take small portions and shape into rolls, place on metal baking pans, cover and rise 1/2 to 1 hour.

Bake in oven at 350 degrees about 20 minutes (watch until brown) then remove from oven. Top with butter and serve. Yummy!

I agree. There is nothing quite like bread and rolls hot from the oven.
