A classic Southern recipe.
1-2 sprigs mint
2-3 tsp Sugar Syrup (enough to cover mint leaves)
2 ounces bourbon
Crushed Ice
Crush mint leaves and let stand in 2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar syrup. Transfer to a chilled silver julep cup or glass and add crushed ice that has been toweled dry. Make sure you don't get the outside of the glass wet because you'll lose the "frost" that is a signature of a fine Julep! Pour in 2 ounces of Bourbon. Stir very carefully making sure you do not touch the glass while stirring. Garnish with another sprig of mint and serve immediately.
I have been trying to recall just how long refrigerated simple syrup lasts. This is a drink I do not make but when served to me I drink it with an inner smile. I like bourbon.
I should mention that some VERY old recipes actually call for the sugar to just be put on the mint leaves in the glass and then hot water put on top and allowed to sit for awhile to let the sugar dissolve and then the bourbon added with the crushed or cracked ice.
