My Husband's Family Traditional Banic
Description
This recipe was given to me by my husband\'s oldest sister. Banic is a truditional bread that the Canadian Indians and the American Indians ate with every meal. This bread accompanies the wild meat they shot and is also very filling.

2 cup all purpose flour 4 tbs baking powder
1 tsp salt 1/4 cup shortening
Preparation
Preheat oven to 500 degrees F.
Measure flour, baking powder and salt in to a large mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly with your hands [make sure your hands are clean].
Add shortening. Using your hands, make sure the mixture resembles the texture of peas. Rub ingredients between your fingers and thumb.
Make a well in the center of the ingredients and add the water.
Using your hands again, mix all ingredients and then knead about four to five times.
Place dough onto a well greased cookie sheet, greased with shortening. Flatten out dough and make sure dough touches the edges of cookie sheet. Then poke holes all over the top.
Then you can either flip dough over or grease the top with out flipping. Either way make sure the top is well greased.
Bake in the oven for about 20 to 30 minutes depending on your oven. The banic should look golden brown and you should be able to smell it when it is done.
Bon appetite!
