My mother's sugar cookie recipe brings me back to my childhood, when we would sit down shape the dough with cookie cutters shaped like hearts, stars, and other shapes. The real fun was decorating them with colored icings, and sprinkles. This is something that now my own children love as well. Make these simple cookies with your kids, or even make some for just the grown ups. Everyone will enjoy them equally!
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
3 ½ cups flour
1 ¼ teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
Mix butter in a large bowl and gradually add sugar. Next add in your egg and mix well. Combine the rest of your ingredients in another bowl, then slowly stir into your butter mixture. Once this is fully combined, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow to chill in the fridge. Chill for about 20 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Form balls of dough and place onto a greased cookie sheet (or roll out dough with a rolling pin on a floured surface, and cut with cookie cutters). Sprinkle with sugar or sprinkles (optional), then place into the oven. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool on a baking rack. Serve with milk and you have a fabulous dessert!
